Torbay Motor Club was formed in 1950 and currently has around 200 members from all over the Country and exists to promote interest in motorsport throughout Torbay and the surrounding area. To this end the Club Council and it’s sub-committees organise and run several major motorsport events throughout the year in and around the Torbay area. Besides these major events the Club also runs several minor events for the pure novice to gain experience in motorsport competition.
In 1997 Torbay Motor Club won the coveted title of "Club of the Year" awarded by Bradstock Insurance and the RAC Motor Sports Association. After coming 3rd in 1996 it was a great honour for the membership to receive the ultimate accolade of number one Motor Club in the country. To add to this tremendous achievement the Club has been 1st in the Association of South Western Motor Clubs Club Championship in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and have also been voted best Best Road Rally in 1997 and 1998. Club motorsport takes a great many forms and costs vary accordingly, but the club works to promote as broad a spectrum as possible in order to suit all tastes and budgets. Anyone wishing to have a bit of fun in their ordinary road car without fear of damaging it or themselves are equally well catered for as those who have a slightly more ambitious outlook.
The club is able to guide any budding competitor, marshal or spectator to their goal with all the necessary licences and information they may require. Members are sent a monthly magazine titled MissFire and a regularly updated website keeps members informed of both national and local motorsport activities enabling members to be involved as much as they want to be.
Until recently the Club organised Hillclimbs at Oddicombe and Finlake, both very popular events with hillclimbing competitors. However, these venues are no longer available for motorsport.
The club currently organises three major events each year plus some smaller events such as the GrassRoots Championship. In 1999 the Club ran the first Powderham Historic Rally of Devon, which is an historic road rally and now run annually under the title of “The Devonian”, In the club 2005 ran the “Trickey Stages” for the first time at Burnworthy near Taunton which is looking to become one of the most popular rallies in the South West. In 2006 the it was voted (by the Competitors) the best Loose Surface Stage Rally in the ASWMC Loose Surface Championship.
As a partner in D4M Motorsport, we also run three Sprints at Mansell Raceways Dunkeswell near Honiton.
In 2006 the Club will be organising a Hill Climb once again at Wiscombe Hill.
In addition to these major events the club runs several more novice type events in the shape of social nights and the very popular GrassRoots Championship.
Anyone wishing to find out more about motorsport in general, specifications and regulations is encouraged to contact the Motorsports Association (MSA) who’s web site is www.msauk.org
On the first Wednesday of each month the Club holds it's monthly “Club Night” where members and interested new members can discuss the world of motorsport over a relaxing pint or two. This is held at the Butchers Arms, Abbotskerswell, Newton Abbot and starts from 8.00pm.
