To organise any event requires a small army of volunteers, often as many or more than the number of competitors.
The largest single motor sport event during the year is the Wales Rally GB, which needs almost 11,000 marshals and officials alongside its two million spectators.
Whatever you choose, your contribution will be welcomed and appreciated. As a marshal, you will join a band of enthusiasts who enjoy their motor sport and, through active marshalling clubs, an interesting social life. Enrolling as a marshal is easy, and there are special training days throughout the year.
After you have gained experience as a marshal, you might like to consider training for other roles, such as a scrutineer, timekeeper, rescue crew-member, club steward or Clerk of the Course.
Torbay Motor Club has its own marshals' register; once included on our list you will be kept informed of the events that the club participate in and run - and also about events run by other clubs in the South West. You do not have to be a member of our motor club to marshal at one of our events, but it does have its advantages. There is no charge made for registration and you are automatically entered when you marshal your first event.
Torbay Motor Club marshals are often invited to help marshal other clubs' events all over the South West area. These can be any discipline - road, historic or stage rally, hill climb or sprint.
In general terms, there are none - just basic common sense. Volunteers are welcome at any age, although the duties of young people may be limited in certain situations. Motor Sport offers Equal Opportunities at all levels, although there are a few legal exemptions, including certain disabilities and minimum ages for officiating.
We encourage new people to take part as marshals and officials, so if you feel that you would like to be involved in any of the events in this website (see the Events Calendar) please contact our Marshal Co-ordinator, Phil Harris, on 01803 213823; he will pleased to tell you all you need to know.
